Album „My Funny Valentine” demonstruje kunszt Bakera jako trębacza i wokalisty. Na płycie znajduje się w sumie 14 krótkich utworów, trwających po ok. 3 minuty, bez rozwlekłych improwizacji, z krótkimi solówkami. Płyta została przygotowana w roku 1994 roku jako kompilacja kilkunastu utworów z różnych sesji dokonanych dla wytwórni Pacific Jazz w pierwszej połowie lat 50., a więc okresie, kiedy Chet Baker był u szczytu popularności.
„Żaden inny trębacz, za wyjątkiem Milesa Davisa, nie potrafił oddać samotności smutku w sposób tak przejmujący jak Chet Baker, który również zasłynął jako wokalista. Każda nuta, którą grał, była jakby rozstaniem z przyjacielem. Czasem wydawało się, że śpiewa, a nie gra na trąbce, a kiedy odkładał instrument i zaczynał śpiewać, jego głos był logiczną kontynuacją gry na trąbce” – tak pisał niemiecki krytyk Joachim Berendt w książce „The Jazz Book”.
