KIRI TE KANAWA objawiła się w dniu 1 grudnia 1971 roku w Covent Garden w Londynie podczas przedstawienia Wesela Figara. Gdy kurtyna rozsunęła się przed II aktem, w pokoju siedziała Hrabina, 27-letnia właściwie nieznana, urodziwa śpiewaczka z Nowej Zelandii; usłyszawszy jej głos w cavatinie Porgi amor publiczność wstrzymała dech. Po IV akcie ze sceny zeszła wśród owacji nowa gwiazda.
Stała się partnerką najsławniejszych śpiewaków. Wykonywała partie Micaeli w Carmen Bizeta obok Plácido Domingo, Mimi w Cyganerii Pucciniego obok Luciano Pavarottiego.
W jej karierze nigdy nie brakło również spektakularnych przedsięwzięć: śpiewała podczas transmitowanych na cały świat zaślubin Księcia Karola i Diany Spencer i na otwarciu Mistrzostw Świata w rugby. W zamieszczonych na płycie nagraniach Kiri Te Kanawa budzi zachwyt cudownie pięknym głosem o niebywałej giętkości dynamicznej i wokalnym kunsztem. Elementy dramatycznego wyrazu i ściemnienie głosu zdradzają nagrania późniejsze dając razem pełen obraz wielkiej sztuki śpiewu Kiri Te Kanawy.
